![]() ![]() More likely, he was using the Variac to get a consistent voltage when touring, or bringing the standard US mains voltage down to a consistent 110v.Resistors aren't a Variac. Perhaps he was trying to eliminate any competition by persuading others to blow up their amps. I highly doubt a Plexi will survive long at 600 Pv. ![]() Running an amp designed for 110v at 140v will increase the plate voltage by over 100v. ![]() I think EVH was telling a little fib when saying that he ran his vintage Marshall at 140v. You can just as easily design an amp from the get go with the desired voltage, but then you can't put a nifty switch on it labeled "Variac". It's just a large resistors placed on the mains that reduce the overall voltage of the amp by a few percent.
